Despite the best preservation measures, these materials are subject to gradual decay or may even be destroyed suddenly by unforeseen events. To protect them, most treasures are stored as securely as possible — which also makes access difficult, and each handling carries risk.

Once professionally digitized according to the latest standards, the resulting data can be used in numerous non-invasive ways while the originals remain safely stored in their protected environments.
