Berliner Philharmoniker
The Berliner Philharmoniker is one of the most renowned symphony orchestras in Germany and enjoys an outstanding international reputation. With a history dating back to 1882, the orchestra has been shaped by a succession of highly respected chief conductors.
To ensure the sustainable management of media assets across several departments, the Berlin Philharmonic set out to implement a Digital Asset Management (DAM) system capable of meeting diverse requirements and chose NetX as their solution.
One software solution for multiple departments
The project’s goal from the outset was to replace the existing Cumulus software with a modern user interface and extend its usability to additional departments. Collaborative asset management functions were developed for the press, editorial, communications, education, archive, and marketing teams.
Key requirements for daily media workflows included:
- Shared keywording for improved asset discoverability
- Standardized metadata entry for consistent documentation
- Rights management and tracking of image licenses, including expiration dates
- Defined user groups for collaboration and approval processes
The assets managed in the DAM include images, illustrations, graphics, videos, audio recordings, and text documents. Fast preview and playback capabilities, along with full-text search, are essential for efficient everyday use.
Metadata design and use of existing lists
A central part of the system design was the development of a clear metadata schema. From the beginning, the goal was to make use of existing value lists.
To achieve this, data from the existing evis database was integrated, allowing established classifications to be used directly within the DAM. This ensures a structured and consistent approach to asset management over time.
Automations in file naming, captions, and color coding for asset usage further enhance the workflow and ensure reliable handling of media directly within the DAM.
Custom portals for external user groups
Beyond internal users, enabling controlled access for external partners was another key goal. In a later project phase, customized portals were developed for brand communications, press representatives, and tours, allowing selected assets to be securely and conveniently shared with defined audiences.
