Digitization for Conservators in Saxony

Scientific image quality and gentle processes for conservation practice.

Retrodigitization: Safeguarding Cultural Heritage – Supporting Conservation

For conservators, the preservation of originals is a central task. Retrodigitization provides a valuable complement by enabling detailed documentation, analysis, and safeguarding of art and cultural objects without unnecessarily stressing the originals.

Techniques are used that capture even the most delicate materials—such as parchment, paper, canvas, or wood—gently and carefully. High-resolution, color-accurate digital images provide a scientifically precise basis for documentation and restoration processes. This is further enhanced by multispectral methods: recordings in UV, IR, and visible spectra reveal pre-existing damage, overpainting, or material changes that are difficult to detect with the naked eye.

The resulting digital reproductions not only support the preservation of the originals but are also secured for the long term. Archival-quality data formats and structured metadata capture according to international standards ensure that these valuable resources remain accessible for future generations.
